Every year, on May 1, all Americans celebrate Law Day. The Lycoming Law Association joins national, state and local bar associations, businesses, and schools, in conducting  programs on the rule of law in a constitutional democracy.  An annual essay and artwork contest is the highlight of the annual celebration.

Entries are received from hundreds of Lycoming County school students. Winning essays and pieces of art are selected by the Law Day Committee.  Both the essays and artwork are reproduced here.  You can read or view the winning entries from a particular year or search the database by student name or school.

Participation in the Law Day events has grown in the years since Congress first proclaimed Law Day in 1961.  The Congressional resolution states:

The first day of May of each year is hereby designated as Law Day, U.S.A. It is set aside as a special day of celebration by the American people in appreciation of their liberties and the reaffirmation of their loyalty to the United States of America; of their rededication to the ideals of equality and justice under law in their relations with each other as well as with other nations; and for the cultivation of that respect for law that is so vital to the democratic way of life.

The members of the Lycoming Law Association believe that the annual Law Day events help to further the lofty goals proclaimed by Congress.  Through writing on issues relating to our legal system, students are encouraged to think about their freedoms, and the constitutional system that guarantees the rights they enjoy.
